Workshop Description
Classical Persian Dance
- exploring Persian dance during the Qajar dynasty
Persia, bordering Central Asia and the Middle East, is the home of Classical Persian Dance. This dance style is a fluid yet rhythmic dance form, which emphasizes expression through the motion of hands and wrists, the relationship between the face and the hands, and smooth, organic transitions within movement patterns. The line and positioning of the body reflect the rich and refined aesthetics of Persian culture.
The focus of this course is on expression using hand and wrist motions, capturing the Persian aesthetics in the body line, and understanding Persian rhythmic patterns. We will specifically focus on the style of dance popular in the Qajar period (19th century). Some movement nomenclature will be presented in Farsi. Pre-recorded classical Persian music will be used in class.
Shahrzad’s unique style of Contemporary Persian Ballet captures & combines the unleashed expression of contemporary dance with the refined, poetically potent aesthetics of ancient Persia, resulting in choreography that is both conceptual and organically expressive.
